Using fun, outdoor activities as the hook, Leaside encourages young people to become positive role models in their community, stay in education, develop their confidence, leadership skills and ambition.

Our activities include canoeing, mountain biking, orienteering and raft-building, all delivered within an educational framework. We also take inner-city children on outdoor activity trips all over the UK - for many this is their first time out of London.

We work with over 30 local schools and youth groups and we deliver 176 recreational sessions per year for local children after-school, at weekends and during holiday times. Most of these children live on nearby housing estates and come from low income, single parent families. We also work with children in Care, who live in foster care and children’s homes.

We deliver free, fully accredited outdoor education courses to young people, equipping them with the skills and qualifications to secure employment in the leisure industry or to become national governing body level volunteer coaches. 50 young people achieve certificates and qualifications in outdoor activities each year.

Our work also increases young people’s levels of fitness and confidence and gives them transferable skills that they can apply to their education and career.

Our charity is located just a few miles up the river from the Olympic Park and we train our young people in two of the Olympic sports. We have an active racing section which competes in races all over the UK at regional and national level. This keeps our young members motivated and provides them with a real sense of achievement.

Leaside has 5 staff and is supported by 40 regular, committed volunteers, most of whom came to Leaside as young people themselves. Leaside costs £200,000 a year to run and receives no statutory funding. 40% of its income is achieved through site hire and schools and group payments. For the remainder, we rely on donations from companies, trusts and individuals.
